Der Teufel auf Erden

In German with German surtitles

“The Devil on Earth”, originated between Franz von Suppé's great successes “Fatinitza” and “Boccaccio”, premiered in 1878 at the Carltheater in Vienna.

The devil has disappeared from hell! Höllenknecht Ruprecht is commissioned to look for him on earth. There he is joined by an unlikely companion, the angel Rupert. A nunnery in the 17th century, a barracks in the 19th century and a dance school today are the stations of the breathless search for the Prince of Hell.

In order, as Suppé biographer Hans-Dieter Roser writes, to give the "happy, musically demanding whole" new conciseness, Alexander Kuchinka has pointedly transferred the original, time-critical approach to the present day. Jakob Brenner wrote the thorough musical revision based on Suppé's autograph score. The outfitter director Hinrich Horstkotte, who has proven himself several times at the Volksoper, stages with imaginative productions.
