Comedy for Music in Three Acts
Text by Hugo von Hofmannsthal
Synopsis:
The Marschallin has spent a night with her young lover Octavian. Their morning gathering is interrupted by Baron Ochs of Lerchenau.
He asks the Marschallin for a suitable candidate to deliver a silver rose to his very young bride Sophie – daughter of the newly ennobled, wealthy Lord von Faninal. The Marschallin suggests Octavian. She melancholically reflects on the transience of life. With "a light heart and light hands," she intends to let Octavian go one day...
When Octavian meets Sophie, he falls in love with her. Sophie, who doesn't want to marry the unattractive Ochs, feels the same way about Octavian. But only after Baron Ochs is trapped and becomes unacceptable as a future husband does Sophie and Octavian's happiness seem assured. Especially since the Marschallin remains faithful and, albeit with a heavy heart, lets Octavian go.
