The Marschallin and Octavian, her lover, use the sunny morning to exchange tenderness. They are having their breakfast chocolate when a sudden noise comes from the anteroom. The frightened Marschallin, who fears that her husband will return home prematurely, regains her former impartiality when the arrival turns out to be her cousin Ochs auf Lerchenau. Since escape is impossible, Octavian, who does not want to compromise his beloved, hastily disguises himself as a maid. In this costume he is trying to leave the marshal's bedroom when he bumps into Baron Ochs, who has just entered, and who spontaneously takes a liking to the maid. The actual reason for the visit is the announcement of his forthcoming marriage to the only daughter of the rich Lord of Faninal, who had only recently been knighted. Which doesn't prevent the baron from making eyes at the supposed maid Mariandl. Ochs asks the Marschallin to look for a suitable suitor who, according to "noble custom", should present the bride with a silver rose. She names Count Octavian Rofrano as the right one and shows him his medallion portrait. The baron is amazed at the resemblance between the count and the chambermaid and suspects that Rofrano's father had slipped up. When Octavian is supposed to fetch the antichambrians waiting in the anteroom to let him in, he finally manages to escape from the love-hungry baron. A motley crew - including the scheming couple Valzacchi and Annina, who offer matchmaking services to the Baron - take possession of the room. Ochs gives the marshal the silver rose and asks him to pass it on to Count Rofrano. Irritated by the increasing tumult in the room, the princess dismisses the morning party in order to be alone with her thoughts, which were melancholy this morning. The unexpectedly returning lover is sent away by the princess with the remark that he will soon be leaving her anyway for a younger woman. Octavian defiantly hurries away. When the marshal realizes that she forgot to kiss her lover goodbye, she hastily sends the servants after him, but they cannot reach him.

Herr von Faninal, the happy and proud father of the bride, solemnly bids farewell to his daughter Sophie in order to be able to introduce her to the "mister to be." In the meantime, the bride should be expecting the Rosenkavalier...
