Sir Robert Chiltern looks back on a picture-perfect career and has a model marriage. However, the successful politician, who is considered to be of moral integrity, owes his wealth and thus his political advancement to the betrayal of an official secret. When Chiltern is blackmailed with this “youthful sin,” her career and social reputation are both at risk. Unless the politician accepts the deal offered and supports a more than dubious project in parliament.
Oscar Wilde's brilliant and punchy social comedy is all about the changing relationship between politics and morality. A topic that can probably be described as timeless.
