Der Freischütz - Premiere
Romantic opera in three acts
Carl Maria von Weber
Libretto by Friedrich Kind
The hunter Max lacks any accuracy. What else is there but to cast free balls with his comrade Kaspar at a dark hour that doesn't miss a target? Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz leads deep into romantic worlds, with a hunter's choir and maiden wreath, forest and wolf's gorge as well as dark powers and white roses that protect against evil. At its premiere in 1821, shortly after the wars of liberation, the opera articulated nationalism and a romantic attitude to life like no other. At the same time, Der Freischütz is a musical comedy about inner worlds, fears and trauma, sexual desires and trust in God. The Hungarian-born director David Marton focuses on the blurring boundaries between the inner and outer worlds and uses film to illuminate them as barriers between the individual and the collective.
