The Florentine Hat - Schedule, Program & Tickets
The Florentine Hat
Musical farce in four acts
Libretto by Nino Rota and Ernesta Rota based on the vaudeville Un chapeau de paille d'Italie by Eugène Labiche and Marc Antoine Amédée Michel
In Italian with German and English surtitles
Premiere
May 31, 2026
Nino Rota's melodies enchant on the big screen as well as on the opera stage.
"How am I supposed to do this? I'm going crazy!" On Fadinard's wedding day, his horse eats the straw hat of a woman who is having fun with her lover in the bushes. But without her hat, Anaide doesn't dare return to her jealous husband, Beaupertuis: A new Florentine hat is needed! An adventurous odyssey begins, taking Fadinard through half of Paris...
Just as fast-paced as the plot is the catchy and melodic music by Nino Rota, who is best known for his film music (La Strada, La Dolce Vita, The Godfather) and who, in his farsa musicale with echoes of Rossini, revives the spirit of opera buffa.
"A delicious operatic delight" was the headline of the Kurier newspaper after the acclaimed premiere of Bernd Mottl's production at the Graz Opera in May 2023. The characters move through a landscape of oversized hat boxes. "We deliberately chose a nostalgic black and white look," explains Bernd Mottl, "because by concentrating on patterns and silhouettes, you can bring out the diversity of the characters even better." All in all, a humorous delight!
