Performance time: 3 hours 15 minutes, with 2 intermissions.

“Wherever you open the score, you feel the wind blowing against you,” noted an elderly contemporary of Richard Wagner in a review of The Flying Dutchman. This sentence, although intended as a criticism, actually highlighted one of the greatest strengths of this romantic opera, first performed in 1843: the seeming presence of the storm and the sea, unbridled forces of nature that make the opera so unique. The cursed Dutchman, who can only go ashore every seven years, is the first of Wagner's heroes to long for the miracle of redemption through love. The story of the extraordinary sacrifice of a woman and a man bearing the crushing burden of his fate goes far beyond the traditional boundaries of German romantic opera.
