Der fliegende Holländer - Schedule, Program & Tickets
Der fliegende Holländer
In German with German surtitles
The ballad about the flying Dutchman, told as a horror story, won't let Senta go. Instead of fear, however, she feels a deep longing to redeem the cursed man. Despite all warnings from those around her, she is determined to be "true to him unto death on earth" and thereby the key to his rest. Aron Stiehl describes the inner states of the characters in clear images: "soul spaces" that are all the more captivating because they always keep a bit of a secret.
Because he invoked the devil during a dangerous journey around a cape, the Flying Dutchman is doomed to restless odyssey and endless search - unless he finds a woman whose unconditional loyalty will bring him salvation from his undead existence. But he is only allowed to go ashore every seven years to find his soul mate...
In Riga, where Richard Wagner was employed as music director, he got to know the legend of the Flying Dutchman through Heinrich Heine's "Memoirs of Herr von Schnabelewopski" and was enthusiastic about the romantic horror story. When he lost his job, he fled from his creditors. The ship got caught in a heavy storm on its way to England. The journey inspired Wagner to write the libretto and the composition of the "Flying Dutchman".
