Boris Godunow - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Boris Godunow

After the death of the tsar, there was political turmoil in Russia. Forced by police clubs, the people of Moscow ask that the aristocrat Boris Godunov should take over rule. Boris himself actually wants to reject the crown, but inwardly he longs for power. Allegedly he had the old tsar's young son murdered in order to gain access to the crown. Or is the story of the dead tsarevich, whose bones miraculously glow in his coffin, just a rumor? Then who is that Dimitri who pretends to be heir to the throne and who gathers troops against the tsar in the border area?

“Boris Godunow” is a play about truth and lies in politics, greed for power and the burden of political responsibility.

In 1998 Harry Kupfer staged the original version at the Volksoper, now the direction is in the hands of another old master: Peter Konwitschny, who was elected Director of the Year 2018 in the magazine “Opernwelt”, is celebrating his debut at the Volksoper.
