Der Rosenkavalier - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Der Rosenkavalier

Probably the most popular stage work by Richard Strauss is set in Vienna. It is hard to believe that “Der Rosenkavalier” will find its way to the “most Viennese” opera house, the Volksoper, for the first time in 110 years.

The marshal's secret lover, Count Octavian, is chosen to be the suitor. He is to present the silver rose to Sophie Faninal in the name of the uncouth Baron Och. Of course the young people fall in love - a disgraced ox, a resigned marshal and an ecstatic pair of lovers stand at the end of one of the most poignant operas of all time.

The production by Josef E. Köpplinger, which premiered in 2019 at the Bonn Opera, was unanimously praised by the critics: It was "wonderfully told", "heartfelt beautiful" and, using a quotation from the play, went "like clockwork". Hans Graf, who has already conducted Strauss ’“ Feuersnot ”at our house, is the musical director.
