Der Zigeunerbaron

A marshy landscape somewhere in the Habsburg-administered Banat around the year 1740. The multi-ethnic state unites here big farmers and life artists: in the estate the pig breeder Zsupán, next to a group of gypsies under the matriarchy of the ancient Czipra. When Sándor Bárinkay, who grew up in a foreign land, returns to the homeland of his ancestors, he demands the goods he is entitled to, but at the same time declares himself a willing marriage candidate: a welcome oath for Zsupán. But a rascal trumps the even bigger and you can not reach an agreement. The beautiful and self-assured Saffi turns the tide, Bárinkay is declared a Gypsy baron and love blends everything for the better. If it were not for the "long arm of the monarchy" who, by means of Count Homonay, enlisted soldiers in Banat for an imminent war ...

The world premiere of the "Gypsy Baron" in 1885 gave Johann Strauss the greatest stage success in his lifetime and the operetta repertoire, a milestone that continues to thrill his musical wealth to this day.
