Richard Wagner described THE RHEINGOLD as the “eve” of his stage festival play THE RING DES NIBELUNGEN - a term that is certainly not accidentally reminiscent of the prologues of the baroque opera. Because here as there the gods have the say and create the basic conditions under which the fate of the people will later be decided. And just like the ancient deities in Monteverdi, their Nordic relatives in Wagner are also beings who embody the driving forces of human existence. In the almost two and a half hours of the RHEINGOLD, all the feelings, desires and thoughts that also determine our own existence appear. Starting with the innocent playful instinct of the Rhine daughters, from whom the Nibelung Alberich stole their gold, to the unbridled lust for power of this dwarf and the mocking nihilism of the fire god Loge to the attempt of the god father Wotan to create lasting values with his castle Valhalla. And last but not least, there is gold itself as the silent main actor.
With its claim to explain the world and its sheer temporal extension, DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN is the greatest challenge for every opera director. At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, Stefan Herheim takes on the task of translating Wagner's tetralogy into the 21st century. The Norwegian has won many prizes and is one of the most important directors of the present: In his work, he repeatedly reveals the context of the history of ideas and the history of the impact of the respective operas.
