DANCES WITH PIANO (DEUTSCHE ERSTAUFFÜHRUNG) Hans van Manen
Three couples. The dancers circle across the floor with their pointe shoes in classical ronds de jambe. Each one brings a personality of their own with them – and already this simple beginning reminiscent of an exercise has entered the worlds that the Dutch dance creator Hans van Manen always explores in his remarkable works: the encounters between people, women and men, constantly measuring their power as equals. That the starting couples will not remain together is clear. Just as in real life, a third person steps between two others, relationships are broken, a game begins … With “Dances with Harp”, given its world premiere in 2014 with six soloists from Het Nationale Ballet Amsterdam, another masterpiece by Hans van Manen can be seen performed by the Ballett am Rhein – in a new version entitled “Dances with Piano” with the young award-winning pianist Schaghajegh Nosrati.
ATMOSPHÈRES (URAUFFÜHRUNG) Martin Chaix
“I am returning as a guest, but here I feel at home.” From 2009 to 2015 Martin Chaix was a dancer with the Ballett am Rhein and created his first piece, “We Were Right Here!!” for the ensemble. With “Atmosphères” the now freelance choreographer presents his former colleagues with a new ballet whose title is taken from György Ligeti’s composition of the same name. His choice of music invokes a polymorphous world: Ligeti’s “Atmosphères” and Krzysztof Penderecki’s “Intermezzo” struck Martin Chaix like a hurricane – a dark, abstract scenario swinging back and forth between contemplative tension and violent power. However, a contrasting and unexpected calm can also be found in the face of this force of nature: to the adagio cantabile from Beethoven’s “Pathétique” a place of emotion unfolds filled by a yearning for the past. An island of stillness and introspection.
44 DUOS (URAUFFÜHRUNG) Martin Schläpfer
44 duos for two violins provide the inspiration for 44 dances! After employing large musical ensembles in his ballets “Swan Lake” and “Ulenspiegeltänze” Martin Schläpfer returns to the more intimate chamber music he values so highly: Béla Bartók’s 44 Duos – miniatures inspired by folk songs and dances that the composer actually wrote as a teaching exercise without thinking about them being performed. A wedding song follows an antiphony to leave room for a Slovak melody to follow … It is the apparent naiveté and spirit of these pieces that fascinate Martin Schläpfer. They resemble the exercises that mould a dancer over a lifetime: the essence of the almost spiritual work done by every artist who concentrates on their instrument and goes back to the basics every day.
