CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA
Melodrama in one act

After the sensational success of its premiere in 1890, Mascagni's »Cavalleria rusticana« was able to conquer the world's stages faster than almost any other work in operatic history. The emotionality of the folksy musical language, the lush melody and the concise dramaturgy of the effective subject, taken from literary verismo and depicting love, passion, adultery, jealousy and "honor killing" in the Sicilian peasant milieu, ensured this one-act play an unbroken popularity to this day. "Cavalleria rusticana" has also been on the repertoire almost continuously since 1891 at the Vienna State Opera. In the current performance series, the young American tenor Brian Jagde, who has been a guest on the largest international stages with a broad repertoire for several years, can be experienced as Turiddu for the first time. If Alfio is one of Ambrogio Maestris' signature roles, which he has often sung here, Eva-Maria Westbroek will also make her Viennese role debut as Santuzza.

PAGLIACCI
Drama in a prologue & two acts

Inspired by »Cavalleria rusticana«, Leoncavallo created »Pagliacci« in just a few months in 1892, the prototype of a »veristic« opera: the prologue already announces that real, unvarnished life is to be presented on stage. The legendary Jean-Pierre Ponnelle took part in two State Opera productions of this effective jealousy tragedy crowned by a deadly showdown in the milieu of showmen: For the premiere in 1959 he created a much-praised stage design and costumes, and for the one shown here, it has long since become a classic Production from 1985 he also worked as a director. The plot, set in the 1930s, captivates both with its love of atmospheric detail and with a precise psychological character drawing. In the recent past, the artist couple Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak have been on stage together in Vienna a few times. Now, after Otello – Desdemona and Calaf – Liù, for the first time in the Haus am Ring they are giving the unequal couple Canio – Nedda, characterized by one-sided and possessive love. Ambrogio Maestri, who sings Alfio in "Cavalleria Rusticana" in the first part of the evening, embodies Tonio in "Pagliacci", who takes revenge on Nedda and her secret lover for his rejection.
