Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's story Das Fräulein von Scuderi was created by Paul Hindemith and his librettist Ferdinand Lion in the three-act opera Cardillac. In the person of the title character, a goldsmith who, being obsessed, cannot part with his pieces of jewelry and kills to protect them, the opera also addresses the tension between artist and work, between external society and inner, lonely personality.
The people of Paris are threatened by a mysterious series of murders. The king has the leader of the Prévôté announce that a special court, the "Burning Chamber" has been set up to find the culprit. A lady discovers that everyone greets the goldsmith Cardillac with awe. The Cavalier explains why: Cardillac is the best goldsmith, but anyone who buys his jewelry is murdered. The lady demands from the cavalier "the most beautiful thing that Cardillac ever created" as a gift of love. When he appears on the night of love with a magnificent belt made by the goldsmith, he too is murdered. Cardillac's daughter, who loves the officer, is torn: on the one hand she wants to flee with her lover, on the other hand she is unable to leave her father. But Cardillac does not hold his daughter back - he is only interested in the jewelry created. When the officer buys a chain, Cardillac knows he must kill him now. But the attack fails and the gold dealer, suspecting the connection between Cardillac and the murders, raises the alarm. Although the officer covers up for Cardillac, the goldsmith finally confesses to his murders. He is killed by the people; but even in death his last thought is only for the jewellery.
