Belshazzar
Oratorio in three parts
Georg Friedrich Händel
Libretto by Charles Jennens
What is rightful rule? To what extent may a political leader place his own interests at the center of state affairs? Can believers of different religions ever find peaceful coexistence? Handel's oratorio Belshazzar from 1745 continues to pose earth-shattering questions. In the middle of the 18th century, no biblical subjects were allowed to be staged in England. But at the latest when the mysterious writing “Mene, mene, tekel” appears on the palace wall during a lavish party, which only the prophet Daniel can interpret, Handel’s oratorio combines theology and gripping drama to form a music-theatrical unity. French director Marie-Eve Signeyrole stages the fall of Babylon under its notorious ruler Belshazzar. For this purpose, the Arnold Schoenberg Choir presents three hostile peoples from the Middle East, musically supported by Christina Pluhar and her ensemble L'Arpeggiata.
