The general Belisario returns victorious to Byzantium. Emperor Giustiniano received him with honor and allowed him to dispose of his prisoners himself. Belisario releases everyone. One, the young Alamiro, has developed a strange attachment to the general and wants to stay with him. However, honors are not all waiting at home: Belisario and his wife Antonina had two children, a son, Alessi, and a daughter, Irene. As a small child, Alessi disappeared one day and never came back. Antonina has now experienced something terrible during the absence of her husband: Belisario himself had the son removed because it had been revealed to him in a dream that this son might one day rise against Byzantium. However, the assigned servant did not kill the child, but secretly abandoned it ...
