Ballet: Onegin - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Ballet: Onegin

The production, which will be premiered at the National Theater, demands expressive acting, brilliant dance technique and a keen sense of the emotional range of the individual characters from the performers.

Eugene Onegin, a verse novel by the Russian romantic Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, is one of the best-known and most popular titles in world literature. The story of Onegin, a smug, selfish and world-weary St. Petersburg dandy, and the shy peasant girl Tatiana and their hapless love. The protagonists of Pushkin's drama first took the stage thanks to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who composed an opera of the same name in 1878. John Cranko created his adaptation in 1965 for the Stuttgart Ballet with Marcia Haydée (Tatiana) and Ray Barra (Onegin). Czech audiences had their first opportunity to see Cranko's Onegin in 1982. Considered a treasure of international ballet heritage, John Cranko's Onegin is an integral part of the repertoire of major theaters around the world. Visually, the production is reminiscent of the atmosphere of Pushkin's verse novel, with the romantic impression being reinforced by Elisabeth Dalton's wonderful costumes.
