Ballet: A German Requiem

This ballet is not an ascension, but shows in a powerful language of movement, anchored on the ground, how much the human being, standing in the middle of life, is always facing the shadow of death. But this dance piece also knows moments of indescribable lightness: in the joyful leaps, the subtle exploration of balance or the filigree discovery of the divine in the human counterpart.

With the »German Requiem« Martin Schläpfer has taken on one of the most unusual works among the funeral masses for a full-length choreography: a highly individual score with which Johannes Brahms wanted to rise above all borders of religions, denominations and nations and in the title »quite gladly also left out the 'German' and put 'simply den 'Men''. Johannes Brahms, himself a choir director, gave the choir a special place in his work; it represents the community and is therefore an integral part of the musical events. The chorus of the Vienna Volksoper will perform this demanding role in the performances of Martin Schläpfer's ballet.

After the premiere in January 2021, which was canceled due to the Corona measures, this "deeply moving and inspiring ballet evening" (Ulrike Burgwinkel, WDR) can now be experienced at the Volksoper Wien from September 2021. Winner of the German theater prize Der Faust, broadcast in a lavish television production by ZDF/3sat and celebrated by audiences and the press alike in guest performances in Israel, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands and Switzerland, the full-length ballet »Ein Deutsches Requiem« from 2011 is one of the best. on Martin Schläpfer's internationally most successful works. With his unique, so physical and yet so fragile art, the director and chief choreographer of the Vienna State Ballet embarks on a search and research for the ultimate questions of being human.
