Ballett: Dornröschen

Ballet in a prologue and three actsIn an adaptation by Marcelo Gomes

Premiered June 28, 2007

Music by Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky

In 1890, Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky's fairytale ballet »Sleeping Beauty« was premiered at the Mariinsky Theater in St. Petersburg and is still considered one of the most demanding narrative ballets today. Aaron S. Watkin brought this famous story to the stage in 2007 in the tradition of the legendary choreography by Marius Petipa. For the 2023/24 season revival, Marcelo Gomes reimagined this classic, adding nuances of his own aesthetic and capturing the essence of the beloved fairy tale: Princess Aurora's development from child to young woman. This includes the royal baptism surrounded by the fairy godmothers, interrupted by the demonic fairy Carabosse, the watered-down fulfillment of her curse in the form of a hundred-year slumber, and Aurora's final awakening through a prince's kiss.
