Miquel de Cervantes' famous epic about the knight of the sad figure, who travels the world with his servant Sancho Panza to fight against social ills and at the same time sometimes considers a windmill to be a dangerous enemy or imagines himself in a fairy-tale like one in his dreams Magic Garden in the Kingdom of the Dryads, found its way to the ballet stage in 1869 in Moscow's Bolshoi Theater by Marius Petipa.

In 1966, Rudolf Nureyev took up the turbulent love story of Kitri and Basil, whom Don Quixote finally helped to unite against paternal resistance, for his Viennese Don Quixote and created an opulent ballet story with highly virtuosic dances, precise character drawings and colorful pictures full of Spanish color a combination of the then rival ballet worlds: Soviet virtuosity meets a dramaturgically coherent storyline.

For almost 20 years, from the world premiere until 1985, the choreography was on the program in Vienna, regularly with Nureyev himself as the interpreter of Basil. In 2011, Manuel Legris, who himself danced various roles in the production in Paris, brought Don Quixote back to the place of its origin in a carefully prepared reconstruction. In 2023, Nureyev's ballet comedy, which is a calling card for every company with its highest technical demands, can be experienced again with the Vienna State Ballet.

PROLOG

In the house of Don Quixote

The country gentleman Don Quixote thinks of himself as a brave knight, as they appear in the novels he devours with passion. In his dreams, Dulcinea, heroine of these stories, appears as his chosen one. But his neighbor Sancho Panza, pursued by servants from whom he stole a chicken, disturbs his dreams. Don Quixote makes Sancho his knightly companion and together they set out to conquer the world.

I. ACT

A great square in Barcelona

Kitri, the daughter of the innkeeper Lorenzo, is looking for her lover, the barber Basil, in the crowd. Their joyful dance is interrupted by Lorenzo, who rejects Basil as a future son-in-law because he wants Kitri to marry off to the rich and noble Gamache. However, Kitri vigorously rejects this. The arrival of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza ends their dispute. Lorenzo offers the knight his hospitality and invites him to his inn. Sancho Panza, who is taking care of some young ladies a little too eagerly, is attacked by several boys until Don Quixote finally rushes to his aid. Gallantly he offers his arm to a minuet. Gamache is angry. Kitri and Basil use the confusion to flee.

II. ACT

Scene 1: Gypsy camp

Kitri and Basil find refuge in a windmill. They are surprised by gypsies who want to rob them. However, they quickly realize that the two are poor and promise themselves a bigger booty from Lorenzo and Gamache, who have discovered Kitri and Basil's hiding place in the meantime. Don Quixote and Sancho Panza also appear. The gypsies become the lovers' accomplices. They try to goad Don Quixote against Lorenzo and Gamache. To this end, they set up a puppet theater where they staged the threatened love affair between Kitri and Basil. Carried away by the game, Don Quixote wants to rush to the rescue of the lovers and breaks up the theatre.

Suddenly Don Quixote stands in front of the windmill. Believing he is confronting a gigantic foe, he charges, but is swept away by his wings and thrown to the ground. Disguised as ghosts, the gypsies try to scare the knight. Kitri and Basil manage to escape again.

Scene 2: The dream of Don Quixote

Don Quixote, wounded and half unconscious, dreams that he has been taken to an enchanted garden as a reward for his courage and loyalty. The Queen of the Dryads leads him to Dulcinea, to whom he confesses his love. But the dream disappears.

III. ACT

1st scene: A tavern

Kitri and Basil, happy to have escaped from their pursuers, celebrate with some friends in a tavern. But Lorenzo, Gamache, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza are close behind. Lorenzo is determined to marry Kitri to Gamache. In desperation, Basil fakes suicide. Kitri begs the knight for help. This forces Lorenzo to unite Kitri with the "dying man". However, as soon as the father has given his blessing, Basil gets up happily. Gamache, outraged by this game, challenges Don Quixote to a duel and is defeated in the process.

2nd scene: The wedding

While Kitri and Basil celebrate their wedding in high spirits, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza embark on new adventures.
