Ballet: Cinderella's Dream

Fairytale operetta by Martina Eisenreich and Axel Ranisch
Based on sketches by Johann Strauss
In German with German and English surtitles

The fairytale of Cinderella is well known. Less well known, however, is that Johann Strauss worked on a ballet based on this fairytale at the end of his life. Only a fragment of it survives. The secrets surrounding this fragment inspire Axel Ranisch and Martina Eisenreich to create their own piece about the ballet's origins, its plot, and also an unusual Cinderella story in our present day. The fairytale operetta presents a Cinderella unlike any other Cinderella in the world!

Vienna, 1899: Johann Strauss is working on a new ballet. A competition is held to find a libretto for it, but only one succeeds in stimulating the composer's imagination...

The Cinderella Ballet: The talented seamstress Grete works in her stepmother's fashion salon. Grete wants to design fashion herself, but her two sisters, Yvette and Fanchon, make fun of her. When the painter Leon enters the salon, everything changes.

Vienna, 2025: Niklas lives with his stepmother, Alice. Her daughters mock him and call him "Cinderella." Alice wants to recruit the talented young soccer player, Danny, for her soccer club, unaware that this will disrupt Niklas's emotional world. When Niklas discovers a painting by Johann Strauss in the attic, he accidentally opens a secret door and triggers a chain reaction that transforms time...

Cinderella herself takes the audience on a fantastical journey that speaks of self-discovery and emancipation as well as creativity and the power of imagination. The music by Martina Eisenreich explores the artistic spirit of Johann Strauss, playing with scenic quotations, and yet creates an entirely new musical world.
