Quartet sounds, bitonal melodic lines and a rich ornamental design: Honegger's oratorio on the shepherd and King David, as described in the Old Testament, is based on a drama by René Morax. Originally conceived as a stage play, the two artists have rewritten it in the interest of easier performance in an oratorio for soprano, alto, tenor, a speaker, a mixed choir and orchestra. The choir is unanimous, but also as a mixed four-part ensemble or as a women's and men's choir.
