No other opera tells us as much about the nature of music theatre as Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss’ (1864–1949) ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’. It is a crucible of comedy and tragedy, myth and irony, illusion and reality. In the prologue Hofmannsthal and Strauss perfectly encapsulate the situation of the artist at the mercy of the market: in order to satisfy the rich sovereign’s indiscriminate taste the composer is forced to insert scenes performed by a commedia dell’arte company into the performance of his opera ‘Ariadne’. Here art is only worth what its sponsor is willing to spend on it – and he will only pay for what he likes. In the opera ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’ cast in the form of a drama within a drama, comedy and tragedy, myth and irony each become blurred as Ariadne and Zerbinetta and their contrasting ideals of love collide. Strauss’ work is in the most capable hands with Dietrich W. Hilsdorf’s nuanced direction, Dieter Richter’s designs and Renate Schmitzer’s costumes.
