»Ariadne auf Naxos«, the third joint work by Strauss and Hofmannsthal, was premiered in its second (and well-known) version in 1916 at the Vienna Court Opera. The actual opera revolves around Ariadne's encounter with the ghosts of her loneliness. It is preceded by a nightmarish scherzo about theater workers who are at the mercy of a patron's whims. Christian Thielemann and Bertrand de Billy direct the work in two series, the singers Camilla Nylund and Lise Davidsen, celebrated in Vienna, return to the house in the title role, Stephen Gould and Brandon Jovanovich sing Bacchus for the first time, Erin Morley sings Zerbinetta.
