foreplay

The livery of the richest man from Vienna is busy preparing the stage for a planned performance in her master's palace. Behind the scenes, the two dedicated troops make their preparations: one is intended to reproduce the first work of a young composer, the opera Ariadne on Naxos, the other a dance masquerade in Italian Buffo style. The mutual jealousy between the members of the two troops makes the emotions go high. How much more the unexpected and incomprehensible arranged program change, which the landlord, represented by his steward, has announced: At his request, the two stage plays should not be presented one after the other, but at the same time to the invited guests. Hit to the deepest, the composer, who is concerned with the true implementation of his artistic worldview, wants to withdraw his creation and forego the first public performance. But the practice-oriented music teacher and above all the Zerbinetta, who is well versed in all seduction skills and knows how to knit the inexperienced young composer in no time, bring about a change of heart for him: with an emphatic hymn to the essence of music, the composer bends to reality and the instructions of the Client. The opera Ariadne on Naxos is thus performed in the desired form, with a performance by an Italian comedian troupe.

Opera

In front of a cave on the shores of the island of Naxos, Ariadne is waiting for death as she was abandoned by Theseus, her savior and lover. And so she no longer listens or pays attention to anything around her: not the three nymphs, not the comedians who want to cheer her up, not even Zerbinetta, who advises a breakneck aria of the mourners from rich experience not to cry tears for those who have disappeared and to be open to new love.

A radiant youth, Bacchus, the god of eternal renewal, is approaching from afar. He comes from the arms of the sorceress Circe, where he couldn't find what he was looking for. Ariadne, holding him as the messenger of death, goes to meet him and immediately, without realizing it, burns with ecstatic devotion, which is returned by God. Transformed by each other and created as new, Ariadne and Bacchus can conclude the opera as an almost mystically united couple.
