Anthropozän

Libretto by Louise Welsh / In English with German surtitles

On an expedition in the Arctic Circle, a research ship is enclosed in the eternal ice. Tensions arise in the research team and relationships are put to the test. When the scientists discover a frozen creature in the ice desert, everything changes. The ice breaks - a climate change thriller begins.

The “Anthropocene” is the age that is dominated by humans. The Arctic has long since become a symbol of the unmistakable and apparently unstoppable destructive influence of human civilization. Humanity is huddled together here like on an ark: A couple of scientists, the daughter of the owner, a dodgy journalist and some sailors gather on the ship of the super-rich Harry King. The plot develops in the manner of a thriller that could be the script for a movie about climate change. Selfishness, jealousy and incompetence lead to disaster on the ship. The exciting libretto by Louise Welsh is reinforced by the dense, independently strong tonal language of the Scottish composer Stuart MacRae, in which dissonance and melody compete against each other and are interwoven in seemingly cinematic passages.

After the premiere at the Scottish Opera, the press was enthusiastic and stated "gripping, dramatic tension and superb dramatic action". Opera now praises "opera for the 21st century", The Herald highlights the "cinematic score", while the London Times recognizes "poignant musical theater".

Stuart MacRae (* 1976) is considered one of the most interesting contemporary composers. Early on, he received commissions from the London Sinfonietta and the BBC Proms and became composer-in-residence with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. “Anthropozän” is his third opera with librettist Louise Welsh, who has also made a name for herself as a crime writer.

Music director Leslie Suganandarajah will conduct the continental European premiere of this exciting opera and Agnessa Nefjodov will stage “Anthropocene” as only the second production after the premiere. In Salzburg she worked with outfitter Eva Musil a. a. the Egyptian revolutionary opera "18 Days ... .." by Hossam Mahmoud and "La Sonnambula" by Bellini.
