The young poet Andrea Chénier, through his honest commitment to freedom and humanity, manages to make himself suspect in every political system: at a party on the eve of the revolution in the castle of the Countess of Coigny, he shocked everyone present by his praise of the ideals of the Freedom. Only Madeleine, the countess's daughter, and Gérard, who is hopelessly in love with her, share his attitude. In the subsequent reign of terror by Robespierre, however, Chénier is suspected of counter-revolutionary activities. He has to hide just like the noble Madeleine. Through Bersi, the Countess' former maid, he manages to get in touch with her. Both swear eternal love to each other. But Gérard, who has meanwhile become a deputy of the chamber, has Madeleine, whom he also still loves, searched for. Just at the moment when Chénier and Madeleine decide to flee together, he meets them. Driven by his love for Madeleine and his earlier sympathies for Chénier, he helps Chénier to escape. Despite this, Chénier was arrested shortly afterwards. When Madeleine then turns up at Gérard's and even offers her body as a price for saving Chénier, Gérard, who realizes that the revolution has betrayed the ideals propagated, decides to go to Robespierre to save Chénier. Unfortunately, this attempt fails. Madeleine, who would like to die with her lover, manages to get the jailer to exchange her for a prisoner who is also sentenced to death. So Chénier and Madeleine walk their last way to the guillotine together - hoping to be together forever in their new life.
