Alexander's Feast - Schedule, Program & Tickets

Alexander's Feast

Cantata in two parts
georg Friedrich Handel

Libretto by Newburgh Hamilton

Since its founding in 1980, the King's Consort has developed into one of the most important sources of inspiration for historically informed performance practice. In Vienna, the musicians are now celebrating the power of music with Handel's Alexander's Feast. Dedicated to Saint Cecilia, the patron saint of music, the ode from 1736 sings of a celebration of Alexander the Great, during which the rejoicing at wars won finally gives way to enthusiasm for the art of music. Inspired by a poem by the English poet John Dryden, Handel pulls out all the stops in keeping with the theme, from dramatic choral movements to gentle flute solos.
