Joyce Didonato returns to the Liceu in an opera by Handel about ambition and power in the Roman Empire
Agrippina was Handel's sixth opera and the last he premiered in Italy. The libretto, by Vincenzo Grimani, is based on Nero's rise to the imperial throne and deals with political power and corruption. The refreshing, light-hearted music includes arias and canzonette which are both agile and in keeping with Venetian style. Many of the numbers are clearly humorous in tone. The American mezzosoprano Joyce DiDonato returns to the Liceu in a style of music that is an integral part of her opera and concert programmes. The cast also includes other prominent Baroque connoisseurs, such as the bass Luca Pisaroni and the Argentinian counter-tenor Franco Fagioli. The ensemble Il Pomo d’Oro is exceptionally well equipped to interpret Agrippina, one of the finest early 18thcentury Baroque operas.
