Hardly any other work in world literature breathes music like William Shakespeare's “A Midsummer Night's Dream”. At night elves dance in the enchanted summer forest and sing the fairy queen Titania to sleep. Music accompanies the wedding celebration of the royal couple Hippolyta and Theseus as well as the young lovers Hermia and Lysander and Helena and Demetrius - when they have finally found each other after an erotic dance of desire and disappointment, confusion and confusion on Midsummer Eight. And music also sounds in the hilarious game in the game "Pyramus and Thisbe" - performed by six "highly talented" craftsmen.

“A Midsummer Night's Dream” has inspired musicians over the centuries. As a consistently successful opera, however, the piece did not take to the stage until a good 360 years after its creation, with Britten's setting, which was performed for the first time in 1960. For this he had arranged the Shakespearean original text and set it to music as a magically light masterpiece that was always witty with references to the history of opera.

It was staged by the young American director Ted Huffman, who, after a series of directing work in France, most recently attracted attention in German-speaking countries with his productions of Handel's RINALDO in Frankfurt, MADAMA BUTTERFLY at the Zurich Opera House and SALOME at the Cologne Opera House.
