BETWEEN ROMANCE AND MODERNITY
Béla Bartók wrote his Second Violin Concerto for an unusually long time, almost two years. The reason for this lay in the commission: when Zoltán Székely requested the work in the summer of 1936, Bartók wanted to write a one-movement set of variations, while the violinist wanted a more conventional three-movement piece. The compromise between the two ideas is the basis for one of the greatest solo concertos of the 20th century: standing in the romantic tradition in its melodic richness and virtuosity, it at the same time finds new paths in its own, quite contradictory language.

Introduction to the concert 45 minutes before the start in the opera cellar of the Semperoper.
