11th Symphony Concert
Myung Whun Chung conductor
Sol Gabetta cello
Robert Schumann
Cello Concerto in A minor op. 129
Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky
Symphony No. 6 in B minor, Op. 74 »Pathétique«
welcome and goodbye
Robert Schumann wrote his only cello concerto in a happy new beginning phase in his life: having just moved from Dresden to Düsseldorf with his family and enthusiastically received there as music director, he euphorically completed the work within just two weeks in the autumn of 1850. »Of what euphony and deep feeling are all the vocal passages in it!” Clara praised in her diary. With the »Pathétique«, on the other hand, Pyotr Tchaikovsky laid the »keystone« of his oeuvre. As one of his last works, it is shrouded in myth to this day with its predominantly melancholic tone and an expressive adagio as the final movement, which is unusual at this point.
