Don Carlos ist eine große Oper in fünf Akten, die von Giuseppe Verdi nach einem französischsprachigen Libretto von Joseph Méry und Camille du Locle komponiert wurde und auf dem dramatischen Stück Don Carlos, Infant von Spanien (Don Carlos, Infante von Spanien) von Friedrich Schiller basiert. Darüber hinaus wurde von David Kimball festgestellt, dass die Fontainebleau-Szene und das auto da fé „die bedeutendsten von mehreren Vorfällen waren, die Eugène Cormon aus einem zeitgenössischen Stück über Philipp II. Entlehnt hatte“. Die Oper wird in der Regel in italienischer Übersetzung aufgeführt unter dem Titel Don Carlo.
