In *State of the Union*, cult author Nick Hornby vividly illustrates the dramatic potential hidden within a marital crisis. With brisk, incisive prose, he has Tom and Louise—he a music critic, she a doctor—navigate the everyday madness of their life together. After a sex drought and an affair, they try to salvage what they can through couples counseling. But we don’t witness them during the sessions themselves; instead, we’re there in the moments in between—both in terms of location and time: Over a drink to boost their courage at the pub across the street, they quickly map out the topics to be discussed. Through clever and rapid-fire dialogue, fundamental questions about human love life come up quite casually. And suddenly, things are brought up that anyone who’s been through the trials of a relationship probably thinks from time to time—but would certainly never say.

Following its resounding success at the Volkstheater Bezirke, the production will take the main stage at the Volkstheater during the 2026–27 season!
