Ronja is born on a wild stormy night. She is the daughter of the robber chief Mattis and his wife Lovis and the pride and joy of the Mattis gang. But Mattisburg Castle is no longer the bastion it once was: a lightning strike has split it in two. And in the other half, of all places, the hostile Borka clan has taken up residence. Mattis is fuming with rage. But his daughter Ronja has no intention of continuing the fathers' age-old quarrel. Instead, she makes friends with Birk, the son of the arch-enemy. When the conflict between the parents escalates, the two make a courageous decision: they flee to the bear's den. There, deep in the forest, a summer of freedom begins, surrounded by mysterious gray gnomes, dangerous wild druids and strange bumpkins.
Astrid Lindgren's Ronja the Robber's Daughter is a timeless plea for tolerance and the courage to go one's own way. Stephan Lack's stage version created for the Volksoper is a great adventure about growing up and the power of reconciliation. Ruth Brauer-Kvam's production brings Mattiswald to the stage as atmospheric musical theater. The music, composed by Kyrre Kvam and orchestrated by Keren Kagarlitsky, captures the rustling of the woods as well as the wild energy of the robber gangs.
