With the Royal Academy of Music, founded in 1719, George Frideric Handel put his London opera career on a successful entrepreneurial footing, at least in the medium term. The task now was to compose one operatic success after another for the King's Theatre on Haymarket, and Handel's first opera for the Academy was a complete success: with tragic love stories, surprising twists and virtuoso arias, Radamisto contained everything that made the operatic heart beat faster at the time. First performed in the spring of 1720, the work was revived in the same year, with the title role now being taken on by a singer who had just arrived in England: the star castrato Senesino. Handel added further arias to the score for him. The same happened when the two prima donnas Faustina Bordoni and Francesca Cuzzoni appeared in this opera in later performances. The four versions of Radamisto are an almost inexhaustible reservoir of brilliant arias - we can look forward to the selection that Benjamin Bayl and the Wrocław Baroque Orchestra will bring to the Theater an der Wien.
