Opera by Giacomo Puccini
Libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa
In Italian with German and English surtitles

Paris in the 19th century, Latin Quarter, Christmas Eve. While everyone crowds onto the streets to celebrate, things look very different in a draughty attic. Four poor artist friends live together here as a bohemian flat-share: the painter Marcello, the musician Schaunard, the philosopher Colline and the poet Rodolfo. They dream big - even if there isn't enough money to go around. But they don't let this spoil their mood. They are young, the world is open to them - and Paris is big. So off they go to Café Momus! Only Rodolfo stays behind to finish writing an article. When his neighbor Mimì knocks on the door, he immediately develops feelings for her, but the tender bonds of love are soon overshadowed by Mimì's poverty and illness.

Puccini's opera is one of the greatest masterpieces of all time. Heart and pain meet precisely drawn scenes of the precarious artistic life of the time, a precise analysis of urban society between acceleration and isolation and psychologically finely drawn characters. Harry Kupfer's production of this opera was first performed at the Volksoper in 1984 and has since been revived numerous times due to its popularity. The Kronen Zeitung wrote in 2022 that it was "fascinating to experience the skill with which Kupfer worked back then, how every character is perfectly drawn", and Der Standard recognized "timelessly great music theater". Now the legendary production returns.
