What is jealousy based on? On love? On fear? Riccardo, governor of Boston, has as many supposed friends as he has hidden enemies. When Renato, his advisor and best friend, realizes that he loves his wife Amelia, a momentous rift occurs: he joins the conspirators whose aim is to eliminate Riccardo at a masked ball. Riccardo himself, whose death has been prophesied by the fortune teller Ulrica, throws himself into the chronicle of his announced death with an almost pain-drunk lust.
