The life of singers can be incredibly hard, especially because of all the traveling and the fact that it was very long. How do you find time to study? How do you save time between trips? As early as the Baroque era, singers found a way to save time and mental effort (and please the audience at the same time). Before debuting in a new role, singers always asked composers to add pieces they had already sung earlier in their career (even if the music was by a different composer!). By taking this music with them from one city to the next,
the singers invented the phenomenon of the so-called "arie di baule" (suitcase arias).
