Violin Daniel Hope
Johann Paul von Westhoff was born in Dresden 370 years ago. At the age of seventeen or eighteen, he was accepted into the Dresden court orchestra as a violinist - and also taught the four-year-old Prince Friedrich August as a language teacher. Westhoff must have been an incredibly interesting person: extremely experienced in travel, battle-hardened (he served for a time in the bodyguard of the Austrian general Johann Valentin von Schultz), he played for the Sun King Louis XIV and Emperor Leopold I. His violin sonatas, printed in 1694, were so far ahead of their time and usage that hardly anyone understood them at the time - Westhoff fell into oblivion. For us today, they seem like the flashing pulses of an alien star light years away, which we absolutely must explore...
