Conductor Daniel Grossmann

Vienna's heyday from 1900 to 1938 was significantly influenced by Jewish artists such as Gustav Mahler, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, the now forgotten Alfred Grünfeld and many others. Surprising connections emerge between these names: Mahler lived as a grammar school student in 1871/72 as a subtenant with the Grünfeld family. The nine-year-old Korngold played Mahler a cantata he had composed himself - he sent the young composer-to-be to lessons with Alexander Zemlinsky... These and other anecdotes come to life in today's concert program. Conductor Daniel Grossmann explains, for example, how Mahler's 10th Symphony is connected to Alma Mahler - and how Korngold's fascination with Shakespeare blossomed in exile.
