What is worth living and dying for—love, art, or freedom? This question lies at the heart of *Tosca*, where musical highlights are uniquely intertwined with a gripping plot, and historical events are woven together with archetypes of the operatic stage. Over the course of a single fateful night, the audience follows the story of the singer Floria Tosca, the painter Mario Cavaradossi, and the ruthless police chief Scarpia—a story that ends fatally for all three. For over 50 years, the greatest stars in opera history have graced the stage in Boleslaw Barlog’s historically accurate production. Joining this legacy for the first time in the opening series of this season are, among others, Aleksandra Kurzak—who has previously portrayed Tosca at New York’s MET and the Royal Opera in London—as well as Roberto Alagna, who demonstrates his exceptional tenor voice in yet another role at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. With Antonino Fogliani at the podium, one of the most gifted Puccini conductors of our time makes his debut at the Deutsche Oper Berlin.
