Long before the cinematic popularity of *Downton Abbey* or the Jane Austen craze, the scandalous inner world of the British landed gentry became the setting for Italian opera. With his setting of Walter Scott’s best-selling novel *The Bride of Lammermoor*, Gaetano Donizetti created a *dramma lirico* in 1835 that is still considered the epitome of Italian Romanticism today. Set in Scotland around 1700, this tragedy is also the most famous example of the transformation of the virtuosic bel canto style into a highly expressive stylization of emotional extremes and features what is arguably the most famous madness scene in Italian opera. Filippo Sanjust’s production, with painted backdrops and spotlight effects, evokes the atmosphere of an opera evening from the time the work was composed. Michele Spotti, Principal Guest Conductor of the Deutsche Oper Berlin, conducts the house’s ensembles for the first time in his new role. We are delighted to present the virtuoso Nina Minasyan as Lucia. As Edgardo, we welcome the young Mexican-American tenor Galeano Salas to the Deutsche Oper Berlin for the first time, following his brilliant performances at La Scala, in Munich, Dresden, and Verona, among other venues.
