The history of the Vienna State Opera

The opera house was planned by Viennese architects August von Sicardsburg, who drew up the ground plan, and Eduard van der Nüll, who designed the interior decoration. But other prominent artists also collaborated in the undertaking. For example Moritz von Schwind, who painted the frescoes in the foyer and the famous “Magic Flute” fresco cycle in the loggia.

Neither architect lived to experience the inauguration of “their” opera house. The sensitive van der Nüll committed suicide; his friend Sicardsburg suffered a stroke shortly thereafter.

Inauguration of the Vienna State Opera 1869

On 25 May 1869, the venue celebrated a ceremonious opening with Mozart’s “Don Giovanni”, attended by Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth. But the building’s popularity also grew thanks to the artistic influence of its first directors Franz von Dingelstedt, Johann Herbeck, Franz Jauner and Wilhelm Jahn.

Gustav Mahler gives a boost

The Vienna Opera experienced its first peak under director Gustav Mahler, who renovated the outdated performance system from the ground up, strengthened precision and team spirit and also called on prominent visual artists (including Alfred Roller) to create the new stage aesthetic.

Today, the Vienna State Opera is considered one of the most important opera houses in the world, most notably as the venue with the largest repertoire. Since 2020, Dr. Bogdan Roščić has directed the Vienna State Opera.
