A roast venison is to crown the engagement of the elderly village schoolteacher Baculus and his young, farmer-smart ward Gretchen. But the necessary poaching trip to the count's park costs Baculus his position and his bride by a hair's breadth. Gretchen's offer to visit the count himself seems inappropriate in view of his notorious sexual greed. A student who is prepared to go to the count as a supposed bride promises salvation. Behind this bride is none other than the count's widowed sister - which is just the beginning of the hilarious confusion.
