A world turned upside down: The speculator Mr. von Goldfuchs, who lives on the first floor, loses his fortune and is forced to declare bankruptcy, while the penniless day laborer Adolf Schlucker, who lives on the ground floor, becomes a rich man after receiving an unexpected inheritance. When it comes to love, too, things are in complete disarray in Mr. Zins’s apartment building. There’s no sign of order whatsoever.

Johann Nestroy’s musical satire on the whims of fortune became a theatrical sensation after its premiere in 1835: until then, no one had ever seen two floors depicted simultaneously on a single stage. To this day, this idea provides a compelling illustration of the dialectic between abundance and deprivation.
