While Hitler was declaring war on the United States, Wilder wrote this hilarious and profoundly dark play, which he completed in 1942 and which went on to become a global hit. Alongside the bitter realization that people must probably always accept evil as a part of themselves stands an unshakable belief in humanistic values.
