We live in a world of the unconscious, so an artificial consciousness doesn't even stand out.
The renowned scientist Wolfgang Bergmann feels the world slipping away from him. His students are turning their backs on him, his university is abandoning him, and as if that weren’t bad enough, his wife is leaving him, too. But then SOPHIA enters his life, and luck seems to be on his side again. She is smart, quick, infinitely patient, and unconditionally devoted—just not quite human. For his 60th birthday, Wolfgang gave himself a humanoid android. Suddenly, he is no longer out of step with the times—instead, everyone else is. Life seems perfect again, but then his daughter’s boyfriend starts tampering with SOPHIA’s system, and she begins to reprogram herself. What starts as a harmless experiment quickly spirals out of control…
In a lighthearted way, Moritz Rinke poses what may be the crucial question in his play: Are humanoids only better than humans as long as they don’t become too much like us?
“When I first had the idea, I thought I was writing a science fiction comedy. But now that SOPHIA, or The End of the Humanists is about to hit the stage, it has probably become more of a play about our present. Artificial intelligence is changing our lives at a breathtaking pace. And it won’t be long before we’re actually living alongside them—machines that are becoming so human-like that we no longer know where the boundaries lie.”
