Romeo und Julia
in a translation by Lucien Haug
"Romeo and Juliet" is probably the most famous love story in the world. It is not without reason that William Shakespeare's tragedy is considered the benchmark for countless love stories. Two young people from traditionally hostile families meet - no one knows what sparked the hatred between the two parties. They take refuge in love and discover it for each other at first sight. But their unconditional devotion is forbidden from the outset.
In his adaptation, Swiss author Lucien Haug sticks to Shakespearean verse and creates a contemporary version about a young, naive and exuberant love in a world distorted by enmity and hatred. The two lovers Romeo and Juliet provide proof of a boundless love that is ignited by and despite its impossibility. The romantic concept of love becomes an explosive against the hardened enmity of the parents' generation, for which it is even worth dying for the young lovers.
Director Stefan Pucher, who has been invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen many times, is known for his sensual and playful Shakespeare productions. For the Theater in der Josefstadt, he is devoting himself to "Romeo and Juliet" for the first time, bringing Shakespeare's radical ideal of love, which the two young people live out, to the stage.
